I Broke Down in a 55mph Dust Storm at Burning Man—And Came Out Stronger (Not Cleaner)

How It Started…

Honored to be a Temple Guardian.

You know those cringey LinkedIn posts? The ones where someone spills coffee on their laptop and suddenly it’s a life lesson about leadership, perseverance, or “synergy”? Yeah, I usually roll my eyes too.

But here’s the thing: sometimes life actually does slap you with a lesson. Mine came in the form of a 2.5-hour total brownout dust storm at Burning Man, with 55 mph winds, zero visibility, and sandblasting so brutal it felt like the desert was personally trying to exfoliate me to death.

And you know what I learned?

THIS SUCKS.

That’s it. That’s the lesson. At least that was the lesson while I was in it.

Because when you’re in the middle of a storm, all you can think about is how miserable you are. My mask and goggles failed, I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t see my hand in front of my face, and after an hour, I broke down sobbing because I truly didn’t think I could keep going. I was in survival mode, plain and simple.

But here’s the twist: on the other side of the storm, that’s when the wisdom kicks in.

How It Was Going…

Sheltering in Place Outside for 2+ Hours!!!

The Real Lesson: Building Emotional Resilience

Somewhere between crying into my dust mask and finally finding shelter at the Temple Guardians Outpost, I realized this wasn’t just about weathering a storm on the playa. This was a mirror of the inner storms I’ve been facing this past year: the grief, the healing, the rebuilding of self.

And just like those inner storms, I came out the other side of this one... stronger.

Not cleaner, not shinier (definitely not shinier). But stronger.

Then the storms kept coming at Burning Man, but with each storm, it was less intense. Each one stripped away a little more of the stories that weren’t true about me. Each time I survived, I stepped more fully into my own power. And that’s what resilience really is, not pretending you’re invincible, but letting yourself break down, keep breathing even when it feels impossible, and rise again with more alignment than before.

Integration Coaching: Turning Storms into Personal Growth

This is exactly what I help my clients with as an Integration Coach.

Life will throw storms at you — psychedelic journeys, divorces, identity shifts, losses, awakenings, and even actual weathered storms. The work isn’t just surviving them; it’s what you do after.

Integration is choosing to return to your truth, again and again, until it becomes part of who you are.

The desert taught me (with a lot of sand in my face) that Resilience isn’t about resisting the storm. It’s about letting it shape you, then deciding who you are when the dust finally clears.

If you're navigating your own inner chaos or coming out of something big, I see you. You're not alone. And you don't have to carry the lessons alone either. Whether it’s a transformative event like Burning Man or a life change thrown your way without warning, you deserve support on the other side.

Radical Integration: My 11th Principle

If you’ve been to Burning Man, you know about the 10 Principles—radical self-reliance, immediacy, communal effort... all the magic. But after facing dust storms both external and internal, I’ve come to believe in an unofficial 11th Principle:

Radical Integration.
Because the real work begins after the experience.
After the storm.
After the journey.
That’s when we choose what to carry forward, what to leave behind, and who we want to become.

I wrote more about this in my blog post on Radical Integration, but in short: it’s the commitment to living the wisdom you received—again and again—until it becomes part of who you are.

This dust storm didn’t just strip away the grime. It stripped away the illusions. And what remained was clarity, truth, and a deeper devotion to my own integration practice.
